SIGNATURES

The base of Marblehead Pottery pieces provides information regarding the age of the piece, Early pieces bore a hand incised mark depicting a seagull overlaying the capital letter “M.” Subsequent early pieces bore a hand drawn square rigger ship. In time, an impressed mark was designed with a square rigged ship flanked by the letters “M” and “P.”

The signatures on the base of decorated pieces often denote both the designer of decoration and the individual who applied the decoration. Pieces were designed by Arthur E Baggs, Arthur Hennessey, Maude Milner or Annie Aldridge. Decoration was usually applied by Sarah Tutt. Some decorated and undecorated pieces are only signed by Arthur Baggs, suggesting that he both designed and executed the decoration. This is likely since Baggs, according to Persick, produced pottery for Marblehead Pottery during the many months each year when he was away from Marblehead, Massachusetts.
